The oscilla were decorative elements and brought good luck. They were hung on trees outside the house to dangle in the wind. The elegant shape of the one reproduced by Ithaca finds its inspiration in the “peltae”, the small shields used in the Roman Army.

Relief taken from a silver two-handled cup (kantharos) embossed with the depiction of a cupid riding an animal similar to a cheetah or a leopard. The cup dates back to the first century a. D. and comes from Pompei; it is currently preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples.
